Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the Hennen family! I first met Denny and Johnny as they were opening the original Bones Restaurant. They were kind enough to hire both of our daughters and they worked there for about 5 years.
We moved to Chattanooga area about the time Yesterday's was closing, and I never got a chance to go there. I did hear stories that it was a very fun place during its heyday, and I am sure Denny was making sure everybody had a great time!
I am sure heaven will be a better place with Denny and Johnny back together again, hopefully, he will look up my brother, I know they would get along very well!
Denny has left us but his legacy still lives on for a long time! May he rest in peace.

Denny, I can honestly say that when I came to work at Yesterdays for you and Johnny, it never felt like work. It was a 9+ hour shift that was always a party, especially when we would stay late on Saturday's in the back room while the band broke down. You will be missed Scarecrow.

I knew Denny Hennen from childhood…I knew Denny as a “Wiley Wildcat”…through OLPH and on into Notre Dame. Denny and I shared many fun moments together growing up and at this moment I find it difficult to get him off my mind. Even as life’s path took me away from Chattanooga and into the world, whenever I would return and run into “Skinny Denny”, there was always a hug and a smile and a genuine “How are you?”…
We shared lots of high school memories together…Denny drove Sharon and I on our first date…and many more to follow as he was 16 and could drive before I could. We shared the stage at the Tivoli together as End Men in Jack Hennessy’s famed CYO Minstrel Shows, we created the Hooray Club, we’d hang at Lake Chickamauga…we were just great friends.
I missed the whole world of Yesterday’s (had moved on to college and into the world), but I can remember on several visits home during the holidays being greeted at the door by him, always with a hug and smile. In recent years we would encounter Denny at Nightfall (at the beer station) and it would light up our day…
Gone but not forgotten.
You’re in our hearts forever.

So sorry to hear this. Denny was my biggest crush as I was going off to college. I would come home on the weekends just to see him. He was larger than life and always made me feel special. Denny always made me laugh and was so much fun to be around. I will cherish those memories forever. My heart goes out to the Hennen family. Hugs around you.

Message from Andria (Moss) Dobson
August 7, 2017 1:40 AM

It was Thanksgiving night and with my sister in town, I'd finally had an opportunity to visit this "Yesterday's" place so many people had talked about.

We arrived about 9pm (How foolish were we to get there so early?). Well, by 9:30, people had just begun to roll in and my sister was getting impatient. She was ready to leave. I coaxed her into staying a little while longer. After all, it was still early.

I had just moved into town a few months before and really had had a somewhat difficult time meeting people. To me, this was a huge opportunity! EVERYBODY talked about Yesterday's being THE place to be (and something or other about dancing on chairs) and I finally had someone to come with me! No way did I want to leave!

Then HE walked in.

My sister said she was leaving, with or without me. I informed her that a REALLY good-looking guy had just walked in - just give it a few minutes. Well, my pleading was to no avail. We ended up leaving within a few minutes.

On New Year's Eve, I left a party downtown to go to Yesterday's BY MYSELF, to see if I could find that guy. Yep, he was there. The only way I found him through that crowd was that he was standing up by the railing. I can see him there now - in his jeans and white T-shirt. Somehow I managed to catch his eye and eventually and amazingly enough, we waded through the sea of people (that I'm quite sure the fire marshall would not have been happy about). We were finally headed toward each other! - in single file lines, resembling worker ants trying to squeeze through the slightest crack in a wall. If one was claustrophobic or self-conscious about bodies touching bodies, the crowds of Yesterday's were not one's cup of tea. As we approached, both lines stopped moving simultaneously (or perhaps we stopped them - not sure) and we were in very close proximity to each other passing between the bar and the brick wall (everyone who ever tried to get to the restrooms knows exactly what I'm talking about) when he looked down at me and simply said, "It's a little crowded in here." I don't even remember what my response was.

Okay, fast forward a few months....one of my coworkers finally turned 21 and we began making Yesterday's a regular hangout - not too often though - like Tuesday through Saturday. We got to know Denny and all the employees. I always felt like I was something special to Denny. The employees always treated me like a sister - watching out for me - making sure I was safe - even pulling me aside and telling me when I was messing up. How was it, that they were ALL like that caring? I think one can assume that it was a direct reflection of their boss.

That smile. That hug. Everyone got the same treatment (unless you wasted the beer and spilled it all over the floor).

I was in my early and mid 20's when I frequented Yesterday's. My parents were going through a divorce. Yesterday's was someplace I could go and forget about what was going on at home. Did Denny know that hug and smile completely changed my day? Did he know what was going on in my life? The turmoil? Did he realize what a difference he, his employees and the whole place made for people? I don't know the answer to that.

Fast forward again to present day - 23+ years since that first visit on Thanksgiving night. I have so many friends I met at Yesterday's - or met through someone I met at Yesterday's. Oh yeah, remember that really good looking guy that I spied on that very first night I visited and saw again on New Year's Eve? We didn't know it then - and had to wait a couple of years to cross paths again - but we now have been married going on 21 years and have three beautiful girls, ages 19, 18 and 10. Denny gave us that.

Denny gave so much to so many in Chattanooga - so very effortlessly. It WAS the feeling that you are the one person he'd been hoping to see that night...but you weren't the "one", nor was I. We were all "the one". How many of us can say we've given even a handful of people that special feeling? and yet he managed to give it to half of town!

I wasn't able to see Denny at his celebration a month ago. I tried to track him down afterwards but was unsuccessful. I wanted to tell him, "Thank You". I wanted to show him a picture of our girls - and say "Thank you for this. You did this." I wanted... just once.... to make him feel as special as he made all of us feel every time he saw us. Unfortunately, I was unable to.

If we all would share as many smiles as Denny did, what a wonderful place this would be.

He will be horribly missed, but his purpose and legacy can live on through every person he affected.

Love you Denny!

Love and prayers for all of his family. May our prayers help comfort you and hasten the journey of his soul to Heaven.

Gray and I spent our first night together there and were married for many years until his passing. Now the door will be held open for you as you enter into your new life.

Denny became my friend during the remodel in the 80's, after that I was a Yesterday's bar fly every weekend. So many wonderful memories revolve around Denny. People used to call the office or even the pay phone looking for me and Denny would say, "Tammy, I am not your secretary." as he helped me down the dark, narrow stairs to the office.
I can still hear him booming out at the door, "Two daulla!" then, "not you, baby; you'd make me pay you back later. Go in and have a good time."
I sure hope Denny has taken over the door in heaven!
So much love for this wonderful man.

There are people in this world that enter our lives for a reason, a season or a lifetime... Denny is one of those rare men that could be all three...

Sharing his infectious deep laugh, bear hugs which could be felt long after he let you go and a feeling that you were important...

Chattanooga and all that knew him lost something in the fabric of our history - so very special that can never be replicated...

I'm very sorry for your loss of a great human, friend, and local legend. I wish I was there to grieve with everyone. I'll never forget Denny, and I know the city of Chattanooga will not either. - Zak

Hey Everyone, I am so sorry for your loss. Jeff and I met at the ever iconic, "Yesterday's" in 1981. We have now been married for 34 years. Yesterdays and the Hennen family have been a part of our Chattanooga family for decades. I went on to have Jeffery in K4 Kindergarten at Brainerd Baptist School and was once again privileged to be involved with the Hennen family. I wish you all the best and I will be lifting your family up over the next few days. May God Bless! Sincerely, Lisa Kell
