James Percy Paul, 96, of Chattanooga, passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2018.

Born in Allen, Alabama, he was a veteran of the United States Air Corps and an ordained deacon, who had held several positions in the Baptist Church. 

After training at several locations in the United States during World War II, he was assigned to the 1261st Army Air Forces Base Unit in Naples, Italy and later in Rome.

His military occupation was Airplane & Engine Mechanic.

James earned the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 1 Bronze Star as well as a Good Conduct Medal.

After the war he was employed with the Defense Contract Administration Services for 35 years, which included work at Brookley Air Force Base in Mobile, AL. as a flight-line supervisor and an eight-year assignment in Huntsville, AL. assisting in the development and testing of guidance and control systems in support of the Apollo moon landings as well as the construction of other space vehicles, including the first Space Shuttle.

James was preceded in death by the love of his life, Inez Roe, of Campbell; they had been married 59 years. 

He is survived by one son, Ron (Mary), of Chattanooga, TN; four grandchildren;  Rebekah Nichols of Jakarta, Indonesia, Julie Portwood of Soddy-Daisy, TN., Joshua Paul and Amanda Paul of Chattanooga, TN. and five great-grandchildren. 

A funeral service to honor James will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, January 19, 2018 in the Heritage Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Jim Barkley officiating.

Interment will be Saturday in Union Baptist Cemetery – Grove Hill, AL.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Woodland Park Baptist Church - Building Fund (www.woodlandpark.org).
