Jane Alice Hixson

Jane Alice Murphy Hixson, died Sunday, January 14, 2018 after a rich, full life dedicated to family.

 

Jane was born in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, on September 30, 1939.  In 1950 her family moved to Chattanooga, where she graduated from Chattanooga High School and attended The University of Chattanooga.  A sister of Pi Beta Phi  sorority, Jane was voted the University’s Military Queen in 1957.

 

Jane married Robert R. “Reggie” Hixson of Cleveland Tennessee in 1959.  The couple lived in Rossville, Georgia and raised three sons, Tad, Chris, and Patrick, while members of St. Elmo United Methodist Church.  Jane worked at American National Bank and at McCallie School where she coordinated McCallie’s Host Family Program, pairing boarding students with Chattanooga families for a temporary home away from home.

 

For the past seven years, Jane and Reggie have been active members of Chattanooga’s First-Centenary United Methodist Church.  Jane served as Treasurer of the church’s United Methodist Women and was a proud member of the Morgan Sunday School class.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents Edna and Earl Murphy and her brother, Tom Murphy.

 

She is survived by her husband, Reggie Hixson;  her sons and daughters-in-law, Tad and Anne Hixson,  Chris and Tracey Hixson, Patrick and Jane Hixson;  her grandchildren, Rob, Jay, Lida, Drew, Matt, Luke and Colin will miss her very much, as will her brother Jim Murphy;  her sisters-in-law, Sharon Hamilton and Linda Murphy; and her two nieces and two nephews.

 

Services will be held at 1 PM, Thursday January 18 in the sanctuary of First-Centenary United Methodist Church, 419 McCallie Avenue.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity or to “The Centenary”(formerly called Inner City Ministry) of First-Centenary United Methodist Church.

 

The family will receive friends in the Narthex at First-Centenary United Methodist Church on Thursday, January 18 from 11:30 am until 1 pm.
