Alexandra T. Barksdale, 90, of Chattanooga passed away on November 23, 2019.
She was born in Glasgow, Scotland and graduated from Eute Academy in Glasgow and attended Sproulls College in Glasgow.
Alexandra arrived in New York from Scotland on December 29, 1949. She met and in 1952 married Doyle Barksdale Sr. in Birmingham, AL.
Once settled in Chattanooga, Alexandra became deeply involved in many causes and groups. She spent her life serving others and worked diligently on many beautification projects around Chattanooga.
Some of the important contributions that Alexandra made to the Chattanooga area were
Serving as President of Chattanooga Council of Garden Clubs, Chairman of Home Neighborhood Development, President of Federation of Garden Clubs, the Scenic City Beautification Commission for Keep America Beautiful & Don't be a Litterbug campaign.
She later became HANDS Chairman and oversaw the planting of One Million Dutch Tulips in 18 different locations in Chattanooga, like; Point Park, The Court House, Fireman's Memorial and City Hall to name a few. Alexandra was instrumental in the planting of beautiful trees up & down Broad Street Promenade, and the planting of the Mini Park on McCallie Ave.
Other notable contributions were being elected Chairman & Co-Chair of March of Dimes and was responsible for getting famous Hollywood celebrities to attend the Telethon's.
She was Instrumental in acquiring our Rolling Garbage cans for the State of Tennessee.
Lastly, she worked closely with Steve Conrad at Public Works, Mrs. Ruth Golden & Tommy Lupton on Montague Park.
Alexandra was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 42 years, Doyle Barksdale Sr., and her sisters, Martha Nowling and Vera Scott.
She is survived by her daughter, Vickie Flippen of Chattanooga; son, Doyle Barksdale Jr. (Comer Buck) of Atlanta, Ga; grandson, Peyton B. Flippen, great-grandson, Jaydyn Alexander Flippen, and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, November 27, 2019 in the funeral home chapel. Interment will take place at 1:00 PM on Wednesday in the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
