Betty Lou Wynn Elkins, 91, left this Earth and was greeted with open arms in Heaven on May 24th, 2019. She passed peacefully at her home surrounded by her daughter Leigh, granddaughter Whitney and great-grandchildren, all of whom loved her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lola Wynn, daughter Christy Fuller, and husband Jim Elkins, as well as her 3 sisters, Edna Gravely, Edith Brooks, and Barbara Piatt.
Coming from a long line of strong women, Betty Lou instilled this concept of strength in her daughter and granddaughters, and was truly an inspiration to the family. Her stories of growing up during the Depression were inspiring to us all. The only idea that she held more firmly than family first was God first, and she truly was a woman of unwavering faith. Sometimes this appeared as unwavering stubbornness, but in the end, she would remain steadfast in her convictions, always turning to God to give Him the thanks and praise He deserved.
Always a worker, Betty retired from Moore Business Forms as an administrative assistant after 26 years to take on an even more challenging role as full time grandmother. As an example of her dedication and strength, when Betty learned her oldest granddaughter was born deaf, she signed up for sign language classes at Chattanooga State so she could communicate with her, and was able to sign up until the end of her life. From teaching fractions to gardening to how to make cornbread, Betty left behind a plethora of lessons none of us will ever forget. We wouldn’t have traded you for the world.
Betty leaves behind 2 daughters, Leigh Hixson (Steve Kiker) and Kimberly Clements (Harry); granddaughters Lauren Taneyhill, Whitney Hixson Carrico (John Michael), Leslie Hixson, Alex Clements; grandson Christopher Clements; and was a precious Ma’am to great grandchildren Whitney Elizabeth Taneyhill, Molly, Eli, and Isaac Carrico, as well as several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 1 PM with the Rev. Don Kelly officiating. Burial to follow at Chattanooga Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be John Michael Carrico, Steve Kiker, Daniel Taneyhill, Michael Piatt, with honorary Pallbearers being great grandsons Eli and Isaac Carrico.
