David "Mac" McCardell Sr.

David Lee “Mac” McCardell, Sr., 79 of Chattanooga passed away at his home on Friday, February 7, 2020.

He was a 1958 graduate of Chattanooga Central High School and retired from AT&T after 33 years of service.

David served as a Staff Sergeant with the US Air Force.  He loved to fish and was a loyal Tennessee Volunteers football fan.  He was also a ham radio operator in several different chapters with friends all over the world.  Hearing him say his call letters of WD4EWB (Whiskey Delta 4 Echo Whiskey Bravo) will forever be engraved in our hearts.   He was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his mother Dorothy Crockett and father William Gordon McCardell, Sr.

Survivors are his wife of 56 years, Dianne McCardell, sons, David Lee McCardell, Jr., William Daniel (Marie) McCardell,  and daughter Cathy (Michael) Iekeler ;  5 grandchildren, Brandon (Kristina) Perlov, Matthew (Lauren) Perlov, Meghan McCardell (Brandon Harris), Danielle McCardell, Connor Iekeler; 1 great-grand daughter Kinsley Harris;  brother, Bill (Inez) McCardell , and sisters, Jeanne (Doug) Gann and Suzanne (David) Mullins; several nieces and nephews.

The family extends their gratitude for the generous support from Dr. Robert Graham and UT Erlanger Oncology Staff; Dr. Frank Kimsey and his staff; the staff from Encompass Home Health especially Nurse Missy, physical therapists Mila and Kim, and occupational therapist, Katie; the staff from Avalon Hospice especially nurse Travis, CNA Alyssa, social workers Stephanie and Cathy and the chaplain Don.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 2:30 PM on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with Pastor Mike Combs officiating.

A funeral procession will depart from Heritage Funeral Home promptly at 2:00 PM on Tuesday.

Honorary pallbearers will be his children and grandchildren.
