Dr. Charles W. Hawkins passed away Sunday, May 27, 2018.

He was born in Rome, Georgia in April 1923 to the parents of William S. and Charlene Hawkins. Dr. Hawkins attended Chattanooga City High School and was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church. He graduated from the University of Chattanooga and continued his education at the University of Maryland College of Medicine, where he specialized in Urology. Along the way, he met and fell in love with his future bride, Wilma Dean Fletcher, also from Chattanooga. They ultimately married December 27, 1944. Dr. Hawkins served in the United States Army and was stationed in Ft. Benning, GA serving as a physician and ultimately achieving the rank of Captain. Upon his completion of military service, they established their permanent home here in the city and began raising their family of three.

Dr. Hawkins began his medical practice in 1953 as a urologist and continued for the next forty plus years before retiring in 1995. His wife, Wilma, was very active in the Hamilton County Medical Auxiliary. He enjoyed a long and storied career as a successful urologist having medical privileges at various hospitals throughout Chattanooga and surrounding communities. His reputation as a skilled healthcare provider and friend knew no bounds.

Among his favorite past times was his love of golf where he was a constant fixture at the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club. He regularly attended First Presbyterian Church, was active in the Hamilton County Medical Society and took immense pride in raising his children.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William S. (1983) and Charlene Hawkins (1991), and by his wife, Wilma in 2003. He is survived by his three children, Deborah H. Mitchell (Robert) of Chattanooga, Brooke Hawkins (Jamie) of Alpharetta, GA and Lisa H. Snodgrass (John) of Atlanta, GA. In addition to his three children, he is survived by six grandchildren, Barton Mitchell (Kelley) of Marietta, GA, Brandon Snodgrass (Katie) of Chattanooga, Blake Snodgrass (Kaitlin) of Atlanta, GA, Natalie Snodgrass of Charlotte, NC, Fletcher Hawkins of Decatur, GA and Christopher Hawkins of Columbia, TN. He was also the proud great grandfather of three, Mia and Sydney Mitchell of Marietta and Brooke Snodgrass of Atlanta.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any contributions be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga to help continue their ministry.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Thursday, May 31, in the funeral home chapel.  The family will have a private burial service. Pall bearers and honorary pallbearers will be Brooke Hawkins, Fletcher Hawkins, Christopher Hawkins, Robert Mitchell, Barton Mitchell, John Snodgrass, Brandon Snodgrass, and Blake Snodgrass.

The family will receive friends from 1 PM Thursday until service time at Heritage Funeral Home, East Brainerd Road.
