Felix Grundy Miller, III

Felix Grundy Miller III, longtime resident of Lookout Mountain and Chattanooga, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 2021, in a local healthcare facility. He was 76.

Felix was born on March 30, 1944, in Washington, DC, to Felix G. Miller Jr., and Jeanne Reese Miller Allison. He was a member of the Baylor School class of 1962 and attended the University of Virginia before earning his bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee.

During the early years of his career, Felix worked at his family business, Miller Bros., and then later transitioned to the Chattanooga Housing Authority, from which he retired in 2003 as director of Section 8 housing. He was a dedicated member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where he served as a chalice bearer.

Felix was a constant reader all his life, and his love of literature reinforced the kindness that was his most essential feature. As with so many of the writers he read, and the readers he knew as friends, he loved to share what he learned and knew over a beer. Many a night concluded for him with a reading from the Gospel of William Shakespeare, uttered with both bemusement and recognition: “Lord, what fools these mortals be!”

Felix is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara; two sons, Felix (Jenny) Miller and Andrew Miller; four grandchildren, Reese Miller, Logan Miller, Leighton Miller and Sam Havron; three sisters, Lynn (Bill) Sloan, Patricia Mathis and Felicia James; stepmother, Shirley Miller; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Due to COVID-19, the funeral will be private. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
