I worked with Jim on the Kentucky Lock project, and we discussed several of his other projects. He was a renaissance engineer because the breadth and depth of his knowledge was amazing. He also was adamant that everything was done correctly and thoroughly; he took ownership of his projects. He loved his family very much, and loved spending time with his grandchildren. This great man will be missed, and my prayers are with his family.

Dear Tina and James and Scott: Our hearts are hurting for you and we are so saddened for this loss in your family. Though we did not see each other often through the years, we know Jim was a very special person who loved his family. Holly certainly thought a lot of him. You will continue to be in our prayers.

Christine Niznik & Children: Deeply sorry to hear of the tragic passing of your precious and dearly loved James Niznik. In the Lord’s Prayer, we pray that God’s Kingdom “Come.” That government by God will make the whole earth a paradise, with no more sickness. By means of an earthly resurrection, we will be reunited with our loved ones, (Isaiah 33:24 & John 5:28-29.) More comfort, please see jw.org. With Deep Sympathy, J. Jones

I had the privilege to work with Jim on many projects up and down the Tennessee River for the last 17 years. Jim is one, if not the, best engineer I have worked with. His scope of knowledge for dam, power, and navigation projects was impressive to say the least. He was comfortable discussing everything from structural, to geological, to geotechnical issues. Always with great input. We worked closely together on the new Kentucky Lock Addition. He kept me on my toes concerning design and construction issues and made me a better engineer. For that I am forever grateful. Outside of work, he always kept up with my family, asking questions about my wife and children. Jim, you will be sorely missed. We will keep the wheels churning on the new Kentucky Lock Addition, keeping you in our thoughts along the way. My condolences to Jim's family, you are in my prayers.

I would like to extend my condolences to the Niznik family on the loss of their beloved one in death. How we look forward to the promised time when "God will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."(Rev.21:4). Be comforted by these words. My sincere sympathy to all the family.

Jim had the best sense of humor of anyone I have ever known. We will all miss his laugh (greatest laugh ever). I was honored to work with Jim for over 30 years in Dam Safety, he was by far the smartest engineer I have ever worked with. I learned a lot from him, especially in the last few years while we were at TVA. I will miss him.

I absolutely loved working with Jim. He was always smiling. I always told him how much I liked him but I knew when he came on our job with our #1 Engineer, Ken Hull that we were in serious trouble. Jim and Ken only showed up on our job when we had something totally messed up just almost beyond repair. Jim was an intelligent individual, well respected and knew how to make things work. I will miss him. My condolences to his family and loved ones.

I was privileged to rub shoulders with Jim over the last 21 years while working on the $1.25B Kentucky Lock Addition Project – his Project. Niz was a great engineer and an even better friend. Never have I met someone with his wide breadth of knowledge on locks and dams. His positive impacts and design achievements on the Kentucky and Chickamauga Lock projects alone are so many they are hard to comprehend. His achievements came by spanning the design and construction chasm like no other engineer could. He was in his element when he was at a construction site.
When not solving all the concrete problems of the world, Jim was talking about his family – you truly had a special place in his heart. Jim has a special place in his work family’s heart – we will miss him dearly. And I can’t help but think that Niz will be at the forefront of my thoughts when that first boat goes through the New Kentucky Lock – Jim’s Lock.

Jim was a close friend and a person who helped guide me, educate me, and shape my future as a Manager at Chickamauga Lock. He was a trusted Engineer who had the necessary courage to make tough decisions under pressure when others failed me. I will miss his friendship and his expert counsel more than words can describe.
