John Logan Rose, Jr. of Signal Mountain, TN died Thursday, May 17, 2018.

He was born on August 3, 1926 in Crossville, Tennessee to the late Mr. and Mrs. John Logan Rose, Sr. and graduated from Cumberland County High School. At the age of seventeen, after completing a year’s study at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, he volunteered for service in the United States Navy. He served two years during World War II and returned to UT where he received B.S. and M.S. degrees in Chemistry. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity and Phi Kappa Phi honorary fraternity. He served as president of Alpha Chi Sigma honorary chemistry fraternity.

In 1951, John accepted a position as an analytical chemist in the Research Department of Tennessee Products & Chemical Corp., later Velsicol Chemical Co. There he became Director of Research developing several patents in chemical manufacturing. 

In 1972, he was employed by TVA in the Central Laboratory where he became supervisor of the Chemical Central Laboratories of TVA. After his retirement in 1992, he was active in the Bicentennial Volunteers, Inc. of TVA.

In 1975, he was given the “Distinguished Service Award” by the Chattanooga section of the American Chemical Society. He was a long time member of the American Society of Testing and Materials where he was awarded the R.A. Glenn Award and the Society Award of Merit.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and served many years on the Board of Deacons. He was especially interested in Camp Vesper Point where he spent many hours constructing cabins and furniture.

For many years he was an active volunteer at “Changed Lives” ministry.

In his later years, he was interested in woodworking, making beautiful furniture for his family and friends. His best known piece of furniture was the porch swing. He made close to twenty swings with Camp Vesper Point and many family and friends all benefitting from “The Swing” and the fellowship that it encouraged. 

John was a dedicated member of the Signal Mountain Lions Club, serving several times as its president. He was named a Melvin Jones Fellow by the Lions Club International for humanitarian service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Martha Jo Rose, his wife of 68 years, Winifred Cullom Rose and son John Logan Rose III (Jack).

 

He is survived by his brother Robert (Sandy) Rose of Rancho Santa Margarita, CA.;  his children, Jayne Rose (Newton) Walker of Columbia, SC, Walter (Jan) Rose of Chattanooga, TN, Mary Jo Rose (Blair) Ashcraft of Charlotte, NC, and Elizabeth Rose (Jeff) Provence of Dacula, GA.  Additionally, he is survived by a daughter-in-law Sara Fortune Rose of Louisville, TN.; Grandchildren include: William (Rebecca) Walker and Haley (Michael) Lawson, Meredith (Jonathan), Schulz, Hayes (Kathryn) Ashcraft, Rebecca Rose, Preston Rose, Mary Rose Provence and John Provence and great grandchildren, Harvey Lawson and Eleanor and Charlie Schulz.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon, Tuesday, May 22 at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jim Suddath officiating.  Burial will follow at the Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Monday, May 21 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.at Heritage Funeral Home and Tuesday, May 22 from 10:30 a.m.– 12 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church.
