Tribute

Luther “Elgin” Smith, Jr. age 92, went home to be with the Lord on July 10, 2018 surrounded by family.  He was a loving husband and father and lifelong leader in churches, community and business.  He was a member of Brainerd Baptist Church. Elgin  graduated from Central High School in 1944.  Right after high school , he enlisted in the Navy and served in Panama during World War II.

He had a 56-year career as a Realtor beginning in 1959,  and only retired at age 89, in December 2014.  In his real estate career, he served as President of the Chattanooga Association of Realtors and President of the Tennessee Association of Realtors for two terms.  He was Realtor of the Year for the State of Tennessee in 1968, and was appointed by the Governor of Tennessee to serve on the Real Estate Commission in 1972.  He served on the Commission for 4 years, the last two years as Chairman.  He also served as a Director for the National Association of Realtors for 5 years.  He served on the Professional Standards Committee for the National Association of Realtors for 23 years.  This is the committee that monitors the ethical practices of Realtors.  He was Chairman of that committee the year that the Standards of Practice for the Realtor’s Code of Ethics was adopted.  These are the attributes and standards Realtors strive to maintain still today.

He was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church from 1949 until 1990 when they moved to Brainerd Baptist Church.  In both churches he served as a deacon and Sunday School leader.  He felt his greatest calling and accomplishment was leading the Youth Department for 39 years.   He has been a member of the Gideons International since 1951, and aided in the distribution of Bibles throughout our area.
