Martin Glenn Jones, 94, passed peacefully August 25, 2019. 

Born in Greenbrier, TN on September 20, 1924, Glenn loved growing up on a farm and learning farming at an early age.  He and his father, while working for other farmers, were able to purchase a farm of their own called Lee Jones and Son.

Glenn was a Boy Scout and was only one requirement away from Eagle Scout.  He was a graduate of Springfield High School where he was a cheerleader. He then attended Tennessee Technological University and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville where he joined Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity and served as secretary later graduating with a degree in Agricultural Economics.

After completing boot camp for World War II, Glenn was asked by the Robertson County Agent to teach classes at Jo Byrns High School on new farming techniques which aided them in growing crops to feed the military during the war.

Glenn later worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority, Knoxville, TN as a land appraiser. In 1959 he met his future wife at a Young Farmers and Homemakers State Committee Meeting.  Glenn and Bettie Katherine Allen were married on June 9, 1961 and to this union was born their daughter, Susan, on July 10, 1964.

Glenn worked for TVA for 22 ½ years moving with the company to Jackson, TN,  Murray, KY, Estill Springs, TN, and finally making Chattanooga, TN  their home where Glenn served as Supervisor of Land Appraisals for many years.  He held membership with the Right-of-Way Association during this time.

For the next 30 years he worked as a Land Appraiser & Reviewing Appraiser for the State of Tennessee Department of Transportation where he worked full time until his retirement at the age of 87.

Glenn was a former member of First Baptist Church, Tullahoma, TN where he sang in the choir and  taught preschool Sunday school under Pastor, Dr. Tom Madden and Minister of Music, the Reverend Ward A. Weaver, and Sunday School Director, Billy Philpott.

Glenn was a longtime member of Brainerd Baptist Church where he formerly team-taught with his wife, the College and Career Sophomores Sunday School Department, the preschool 4 Sunday School Class (Jones Class), and Extended Session.    Glenn and Bettie Katherine loved teaching the 4 year old’s along with Martha Hathorne , Edna Farmer, and Jeanette Deacon, under the Minister of Preschool and Children’s Director, Phyllis Nicholson, and Pastor ,the Reverend Bill Bond, and Minister of Education, Reverend Robert Cooper.

Glenn served on the Benevolence Committee, as Deacon, and former Vice Chairman of Deacons at Brainerd Baptist under the leadership of Dr. Frank H. Crumpler.   He was an honorary member of the Good News Sunday School Class.

During their daughter’s school years, Glenn was always active in school activities with Mrs. Bean’s Kindergarten in Winchester, TN, Estill Springs Elementary, Ooltewah Elementary and Middle Schools.

He served as an officer in the Ooltewah High School Choir Boosters , and was an active member with the Parent-Teacher Student Association and the Hamilton County Council of PTA.

Raising cows, vegetables and flower gardening as well as family time were some of Glenn’s favorite times-  especially getting to share the vegetables and flowers with family and friends. He especially loved growing daffodils, gladiolas, and iris's.

He loved people, his family and his friends.  He was the finest husband, father and grandfather and a friend to all that knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Lee and Annie Lou Poole Jones, and sister, Katherine Ruth Meggs.

Glenn is survived by his wife of 58 years, Bettie Katherine Allen Jones; daughter, Susan Elizabeth (Roger W.) Martin, Goodlettsville, TN; grandchildren, Christopher William Martin, Chattanooga and Katherine Elizabeth Martin, Goodlettsville, TN; brother in law, the Reverend Wendell A. Meggs, Springfield, TN; nephew, Mark Anderson Meggs, Jeffersonville, IN.

The service will be held Thursday, August 29th at 1 pm EST at Brainerd Baptist Church with the Reverend Bill Bond, Dr. M.C. Tolbert, and Dr. Steve Rowland officiating. Pallbearers will be Marcus C. Taylor, Jeff P. Hartwell, Stephen L. Still. Andrew Z. Martin, Robert K. Allen, and Michael E. Teets.   Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Creasman, Frank N. McGregor, Arnold Walker, Martha Hathorne, Edna Farmer, Peggy & Bill Pryor, and Jacquelyn Wolfe.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Martin Glenn Jones to the Tennessee Baptist Children’s Home, 6623 Lee Highway, Chattanooga, TN 37421 or the Community Kitchen, PO Box 11203, Chattanooga, TN 37401.

Graveside services will be held Friday, August 30th at 1:30  pm CST at Elmwood Cemetery, Springfield, TN.  The family will receive friends Friday from 11- 1 at Austin-Bell Funeral Home, Springfield, TN.  Pallbearers will be Robert K. Allen, Dr. William Bailey Allen, Jr., William Bailey Allen III, Allen B. Persinger, Charles W. Persinger Jr., and Robert W. Martin.   Honorary pallbearers will b Mark A. Meggs, Martha Ralph, William Bailey Allen Sr., Amelia Allen Hartz, and Matthew Weaver.

The family would like to thank Nena Mitchell and staff,  Morning Pointe at Shallowford Assisted Living, Hearth Hospice, Leona and Carrie,  Angela Montgomery, and Pam Ramsey for all of their love and kindness during Glenn’s illness.
