Mary Evelyn (Usrey) Lewallen

Mary Evelyn Lewallen, 96, of Chattanooga, Tennessee passed away Tuesday, September 3, 2019.  

Evelyn was born in Gurley, Alabama and was the daughter of the late Leslie and Leora Usrey. 

She was married to the late O’Dell Lewallen, of Chattanooga for 41 years and she lived most of her life in Chattanooga. 

Evelyn worked at Standard Coosa Thatcher until 1988 when she retired after 41 years of service. 

She moved back to Gurley upon her husband’s death in 1990, then several years ago, returned to Chattanooga and enjoyed making new friends at Elmcroft of Shallowford. 

Evelyn’s family wishes to offer many thanks to the caring staff of Elmcroft, and in particular, to the special ladies she dined with each day, ho made her laugh, and made her feel loved, cared for, and part of the gang.  What a rare gift to make precious new friends in her mid-nineties.

Her beloved husband O’Dell and her sister, Edna Usrey, preceded Evelyn in death.

Several nephews, nieces, and cousins¸ as well as many dear friends in Gurley survive her.  

A graveside service will be held in the Chattanooga National Cemetery on Friday, September 6th at 11:00 a.m. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Chattanooga’s Humane Educational Society.
