Rex Clark Helton went home to be with the Lord on Nov. 30, 2021. He was 59.
A native of Rockwood, Tennessee, Rex graduated from Harriman High School. He earned a degree in mechanical engineering in 1986 from Tennessee Technological University.
A 39-year employee of TVA, Rex began his career there as a co-op student at 18. He was a senior program manager and served the agency in many roles throughout his career.
Rex accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior as a young child. He served many years as a deacon and youth Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church, Chattanooga. He was a dedicated leader and mentor of youth, faithfully teaching God’s word and enjoying fun with his students. He was known for his competitive and joyful spirit. He frequently challenged students with Romans 12: 1-2: “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Rex was a devoted family man, supporting his wife, Laura, and his daughter, Haley, in their interests and activities. He and Laura enjoyed a happy marriage for 32 years. He was an avid golfer who enjoyed a wide circle of friends who shared his passion for golf. His favorite days on the golf course were playing with his daughter Haley.
Rex was preceded in death by his father, Shirley Helton.
Additional survivors include his mother, Sandra Helton; three sisters, Beverly (Kendall) Kelley, Michelle (Joe) Kibitleski, and Melissa (Maurice) Morton; several nieces and nephews. He enjoyed a loving and close relationship with his in-laws, Owen and Wanda Holbrook.
Rex had a deep love for God’s word and actively sought to follow and obey it. Second Timothy 2:15 sums up his life: “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.’’
