Tribute

Susan Hughes Ingham, 78, of Signal Mountain, died peacefully on September 13, 2019 at home surrounded by her children.

Sue was born in Kingston, NY and grew up in Upper Montclair, NJ.  While attending Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia, Sue met her future husband, Ron and they married in June 1963.  Sue worked as a social worker helping children before she and Ron welcomed two children of their own, Betsy and Michael. Eventually, the family landed on Signal Mountain, TN where she lived until her death. While raising their children was her main focus, Sue became an active member in her community. Never one to seek the spotlight, Sue’s passion was community service.  As a longtime member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, she became very involved in the Chattanooga Community Kitchen. Sue was able to utilize her social work background in many ways through her involvement with the Chambliss Center for Children as well as The Children’s Academy both in Chattanooga where she served on both boards.

Sue had a variety of interests outside of community work. In her early years, she was an avid tennis player as well as golfer.  Going to the beach with her family was the highlight of every summer.  Traveling to places like Europe, Africa and the Caribbean with Ron and their longtime friends created unforgettable memories. Sue also shared her interest in reading with a special group of friends who referred to themselves as the Lunatics.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ron; her parents, Edward and Margaret; and her brothers, Peter and John.

She is survived by her daughter Betsy (Greg) Wallis, Indianapolis, IN; her son Michael (Bethany) Ingham, Signal Mountain, TN; her five grandchildren Ethan and Danny Wallis; Gus, Nora and Ben Ingham; brother- and sister-in-law, many nieces and nephews; close friends and devoted caregivers all of whom will deeply miss her.

A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Monday September 30 at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, Signal Mountain, TN. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10-11 AM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Scleroderma Foundation, American Cancer Society, Chattanooga Community Kitchen, Chambliss Center for Children, The Children’s Academy for Education and Learning, or the charity of your choice.
