Twenty-six or 27 seemed “older” to us in 1977 at the beginning of law school. The five of us older students had been out of college for 5, 6, or 7 years. We were all married; some of us had kids; some, like Geoff, had kids on the way. We all went home to our families after class each day, not to the local saloon, like the younger, foot-loose students.
Every lawyer remembers his or her study group from the first few weeks of law school. It’s basically a mutual-support society. We five older students met each day to talk about cases and classes. And families and life and law school. When I think of Geoff, I always have a picture of him from our first year, all of us sitting in a booth in the cafeteria, just talking. Our mutual support got us all through our first year, and then through all three years.
I saw less of Geoff over the years. We practiced and lived 1,000 miles apart. But all of us “older” students remember his quiet, engaged manner as we all, together, studied law school and studied life. Larry, Rod, Dick, and Dan, his study-group mates, all remember Geoff fondly.

Matt, Logan and the entire Young family, I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your father. I can recall spending many days of our childhood at your house in Chattanooga, and I remember your father fondly. Please let me know if there's anything I can do for you.

Jeannie, Geoff was one of the kindest and most decent men I ever knew, and a wonderful friend to me and especially Walt, who will miss him terribly. We are so very sorry for your loss, and filled with sorrow ourselves. Our hearts go out to his children and grandchildren as well, and to his sister. Please know that you are all in our thoughts at this very sad time. May peace be with you.
